– Enhancing Music Creation for Guitarists with AI Assistance

Purdue University is putting artificial intelligence center stage with novel research examining the…

The Purdue project explores the utilization of technology to enhance the performances of solo musicians and bands. Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into studies that aim to improve both individual and group musical endeavors. This initiative, supported by the National Science Foundation, focuses on merging AI into STEM fields and the arts. Yeon-Ji “Kristen” Yun, the principal investigator of the program and a practicing musician, highlights the potential of AI in music composition and recording but emphasizes its underutilization in music performance and education. The project aims to create two AI-powered tools for musicians, leveraging computer science, natural language processing, and sound analysis techniques.

The first tool, known as the Evaluator, assesses a musician’s audio and video performances by comparing them to transcribed music scores and a database of video performances. This analysis helps in identifying discrepancies and suggesting improvements to enhance practice sessions and live performances. The second tool, named the Companion, utilizes sound analysis to complement musicians’ performances by filling in missing instrument parts within an ensemble. While the initial focus is on string instruments, the ultimate goal is to extend these tools to benefit musicians playing any instrument, regardless of their skill level.

Yun emphasizes that these AI tools empower musicians to maintain their creative essence while receiving valuable feedback and support. The research team, including Yung-Hsiang Lu, Cheryl Zhenyu Qian, and Mohammad Rahman from Purdue University, collaborates to explore the impact of AI systems on musicians’ practice routines and performances. They aim to understand the factors influencing musicians’ acceptance of AI assistance in the future.

Purdue University, renowned for its cutting-edge research and educational excellence, stands out as a leading public research institution in the United States. With a strong commitment to accessibility and affordability, Purdue accommodates over 105,000 students across various programs and locations, with a significant presence at the West Lafayette campus. The university’s dedication to innovation is evident through initiatives like the Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business and its expanding urban campus in Indianapolis.
