In the ongoing AI competition, major global powers are increasingly pressuring potential allies to align themselves with either the U.S. or China. Recently, a prominent Emirati tech company, G42, decided to side with the U.S., signaling a significant shift in alliances.
G42, based in the UAE, had been flagged by the Biden administration as a national security concern due to its connections with Chinese entities. To address these concerns, G42 announced its decision to cut ties with Chinese hardware suppliers and transition to using hardware from American providers, as reported by the Financial Times.
CEO Peng Xiao emphasized the necessity for G42 to make a definitive choice, stating, “We cannot work with both sides. We can’t.” This strategic move aims to mitigate the national security risks associated with the company’s previous collaborations with China.
Despite its past associations with Chinese companies, G42 has established partnerships with leading U.S. tech firms such as Microsoft and OpenAI. Concerns regarding potential espionage activities by China through G42 prompted warnings from U.S. national security personnel and government officials. Allegations included suspicions of China leveraging G42 to access advanced AI technology and genetic data of American citizens, notably through COVID test donations.
Xiao reassured that G42 prioritizes data security, ensuring that sensitive information remains protected within U.S. data centers. The company’s revised approach involves phasing out business dealings with Huawei, a Chinese tech giant under scrutiny for its alleged ties to the Chinese government. By distancing itself from Huawei and other Chinese partners, G42 aims to align more closely with U.S. interests and safeguard its collaborations with American counterparts.
G42’s affiliations extend beyond hardware suppliers to include Chinese biotech firm BGI Genomics and a substantial stake in ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. The concerns over TikTok’s data privacy and BGI Group’s data collection practices have added complexity to G42’s partnerships with Chinese entities.
