### Leveraging Machine Learning to Counter China in the Pacific: A Priority for the US Military

Joint Forces commander at Pentagon event in Silicon Valley says last three years marked by ‘erosion…

US Joint Forces are encouraged to utilize machine learning to enhance their ability to predict potential threats in the Pacific region amidst China’s escalating activities in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, as per a senior American commander in the area.

During a gathering with Silicon Valley executives hosted by the Defence Innovation Unit, a Pentagon entity dedicated to expediting the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, Admiral Samuel Paparo highlighted the challenges faced by the US in detecting military alerts effectively.

Admiral Paparo emphasized a concerning trend of diminishing strategic, operational, and tactical warnings over the past three years, attributing this to significant shifts in China’s military capabilities and readiness.

He cautioned that the People’s Liberation Army of China was elevating the threshold for warnings, indicating an imminent scenario where the US might confront a formidable military operation camouflaged as routine exercises.

In addition to China’s activities, Admiral Paparo acknowledged other regional concerns such as North Korea’s military provocations, Russia’s naval ambitions in the Pacific, and the bilateral weapons trade between these nations.

While emphasizing the increasing collaboration between Joint Forces and US allies, Admiral Paparo stressed the importance of leveraging mass data analytics and refining intelligence processing to enhance warning capabilities significantly.

By harnessing data analytics, the US military can enhance its capacity to anticipate competitors’ intentions and effectively prepare for potential acts of aggression.

Admiral Paparo underscored the necessity of identifying applications capable of executing mass data analytics and precise covariance calculations swiftly, ensuring secure and encrypted communication channels for real-time delivery of accurate intelligence to warfighters.

The US military has been closely monitoring Beijing’s heightened military exercises and expanded presence in the South China Sea and near Taiwan in recent years.

China’s assertive actions in the region, including the recent incident involving the death of two mainland Chinese fishermen during a sea chase by Taiwan, reflect Beijing’s steadfast pursuit of its territorial claims and its willingness to employ coercive measures if deemed necessary.

Despite the US and most countries not officially recognizing Taiwan as an independent state, Washington remains steadfast in its opposition to any unilateral use of force against the self-governing island, reaffirming its commitment to providing defensive weaponry to Taiwan.

Furthermore, Washington has consistently condemned China’s military maneuvers in the South China Sea, where Beijing lays historical sovereignty claims over disputed territories within the “nine-dash line,” leading to escalating tensions with neighboring countries.

Recent confrontations between China and the Philippines near Scarborough Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal, both claimed by multiple nations, have further exacerbated regional tensions, underscoring the complex geopolitical landscape in the Pacific.
