As the field of artificial intelligence continues to progress, humans are also advancing their understanding and integration of this technology.

In a groundbreaking development, the University of Pennsylvania will introduce a new major dedicated to AI starting this fall. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the university becomes the first among the prestigious Ivy League institutions to offer an undergraduate degree specializing in artificial intelligence.

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence program will provide students with a comprehensive education on the principles of AI and its responsible and ethical application. The curriculum will delve into the rapid evolution of generative AI and its profound impact on various sectors such as healthcare, energy, transportation, commerce, and national security.

Interim President J. Larry Jameson expressed enthusiasm about the program, stating, “This new degree program signifies a significant advancement for the Penn engineers who will play a pivotal role in creating and implementing these transformative technologies for the betterment of society.”

Key Aspects of the AI Major

Students enrolled in the B.S.E program will engage in advanced coursework covering a wide array of topics including computing algorithms, machine learning, data analytics, and advanced robotics. Foundational courses such as “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” and “Data, Systems, Decisions” will be complemented by specialized classes like “Control For Autonomous Robots,” “Natural Language Processing,” and “Signal and Information Processing.”

Moreover, the program offers elective courses in specialized areas such as “Trustworthy AI,” “Machine Perception,” and “Brain Computer Interfaces.” For a detailed overview of the curriculum and course offerings, refer to the official program website.

Concentration Options for Students

To cater to students’ diverse interests, the program provides a selection of concentrations to choose from, including Robotics, Vision/Language, Machine Learning, Data/Society, and Health/Systems.

Fostering Trustworthy AI

The establishment of this program underscores the recognition of AI as an independent academic discipline, as highlighted by Computer and Information Science Department Chair Zachary Ives. He emphasized the importance of addressing fundamental questions surrounding intelligence, learning, ethical alignment of AI with societal values, and the development of reliable AI systems.

Dean Vijay Kumar asserted that the program will equip future engineers with the knowledge and skills to leverage AI as a beneficial tool and a force for positive change. George J. Pappas, the program leader, emphasized the significance of harnessing AI for social good as a primary challenge in the field of engineering.

The AI major is set to commence in the fall semester of 2024. Current Penn students interested in transferring to the 2024 cohort can apply this fall, while prospective students aiming for the Fall 2025 cohort can also submit their applications during the same period.
