Artificial intelligence (AI) is a dynamic field that impacts nearly every facet of daily life. House Speaker Murrell Smith from COLUMBIA, S. C. has introduced the establishment of a novel House Committee dedicated to researching AI and associated realms of crime and security. The committee aims to “formulate strategies to protect the rights and welfare of South Carolina residents” by understanding and preventing potential threats to the state.
Smith emphasized, “In a rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology, it is imperative that we delve into the implications of such swift advancements on our state’s populace.” Ensuring that these innovations serve the greater good of society is paramount, with a primary focus on safeguarding the rights and welfare of South Carolina’s constituents.
The South Carolina committee is set to become the inaugural standing council of its type nationwide. Following the conclusion of the General Assembly towards the latter part of 2024, Speaker Smith intends to petition the entire Assembly to ratify the permanence of this council within the House framework.
