### Utilizing AI for Online Dating: 23% of Americans Aim to Enhance Attractiveness

Roses are red, violets are blue, a machine made my page alluring to you

Almost a quarter of individuals surveyed in the United States by cybersecurity company McAfee revealed that they are utilizing generative AI technology to enhance their online dating profiles with more appealing photographs, creative conversation starters, and similar enhancements.

In a study encompassing 7,000 adults from the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, India, and Japan, the cybersecurity firm discovered that people are increasingly turning to AI tools to aid in their quest for companionship. The survey highlighted that 45 percent of men globally, along with 39 percent of all adults, have considered employing a machine to compose a Valentine’s Day message for a romantic interest this year.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 23 percent of surveyed Americans acknowledged using AI applications to craft images or other content for online dating purposes.
  • Globally, 30 percent of men and 27 percent of women are leveraging AI to add a special touch to their dating profiles, photos, and interactions with potential dates.
  • One out of every four Americans is considering using AI to draft Valentine’s Day messages this year, a slight increase from 26 percent in 2023.

Interestingly, 69 percent of respondents reported that AI-generated content has enhanced their online dating experiences, leading to more positive responses from individuals they engage with compared to messages they composed independently. This improvement was noted by 69 percent of individuals who utilized machine learning to enhance their dating interactions.

However, respondents expressed reservations about potential partners utilizing AI tools in the dating realm. Nearly two-thirds indicated that they would have less trust in someone if they discovered that their photos or dating profiles were generated by software rather than being authentic.

McAfee also cautioned about the darker implications of generative AI tools, pointing out that malicious actors can exploit these technologies to fabricate fake personas and carry out scams. A third of the surveyed Americans admitted to conversing with a romantic interest who later turned out to be a scammer.

Steve Grobman, Chief Technology Officer at McAfee, emphasized the misuse of AI by cybercriminals to deceive individuals seeking love online, leading to financial losses or identity theft. The risks associated with online dating were further underscored by the fact that 57 percent of respondents in the US had been solicited for money after meeting someone for a date. Additionally, around 10 percent disclosed being asked for passwords and social security numbers, while 20 percent were probed for their precise birthdates.

The prevalence of AI-generated fraudulent content is compelling internet users to adopt more sophisticated methods to verify the authenticity of potential romantic interests. For instance, 38 percent of respondents admitted to conducting reverse image searches on profile pictures to verify the identity of individuals, while 59 percent acknowledged scrutinizing the social media presence of dating site members to assess their online behavior.

In conclusion, Grobman urged individuals to maintain a balance between romantic optimism and prudent skepticism, exercise caution before sharing sensitive details online, and utilize appropriate tools to safeguard their privacy, identity, and personal information in the digital realm.
