In a bid to combat fraudulent activities associated with its AI products, Google has lodged a complaint. The technology giant unveiled the legal action on Monday (Nov. 13) through its blog, aiming to set a precedent for thwarting AI-related fraud.
Halimah DeLaine Prado, Google’s general counsel, highlighted the lawsuit’s focus on scammers targeting users of Google’s Bard bot. These fraudsters run deceptive advertisements enticing users to download Bard, purportedly free of charge, only to unknowingly install malware that compromises their social media accounts. Prado emphasized the need for measures to prevent such scams and enable swift intervention by U.S. authorities to disable fraudulent domains. This proactive approach, Google believes, will deter future fraudulent activities effectively.
Google’s legal initiatives announced on Monday also include addressing individuals who misuse the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to undermine competitors. By leveraging fake copyright claims, these scammers exploit the DMCA’s provisions to file baseless complaints against rivals, resulting in the unwarranted deactivation of over 100,000 commercial websites. Google aims not only to halt such malicious practices but also to raise awareness about the detrimental impact of false takedown notices on small businesses nationwide.
Following the White House’s announcement of plans to crack down on scammers employing AI-generated text models for phone scams, Google swiftly took legal action. The Biden administration’s upcoming “virtual hackathon” seeks to empower businesses in developing AI models capable of detecting and preventing fraudulent robotexts and robocalls, particularly those targeting vulnerable groups like senior citizens.
Sources suggest that such technology could empower malicious actors with advanced tools, including AI-generated voice replicas, posing significant risks for illegal activities. The concept of countering “bad AI with good AI” has gained attention, emphasizing the potential of leveraging advanced AI solutions to combat emerging threats effectively.
