On Thursday, after numerous demonstrations and teasers hinting at the potential of IoT-driven devices, Humane finally unveiled its inaugural gadget: the AI Pin.
As previously disclosed on Tuesday, the device is priced at \(699 and comprises two components: a flat unit and a detachable battery pack that can be attached to clothing or other materials. Alongside the initial cost, there is a \)24 monthly fee for a Humane membership, which includes a phone number and data protection via T-Mobile’s network. The company announced that the device will commence shipping in early 2024, with preorders starting on November 16th.
The AI Pin is equipped with an Android CPU—although the specific model remains undisclosed—and can be operated using a combination of voice commands, gestures, and a built-in projector. Weighing approximately 34 ounces, the Pin gains an additional 20 ounces with the power pack attached. The integrated camera captures 13-megapixel photos and is expected to support video recording following a software update.
In contrast to devices like the Rewind Pendant, the AI Pin is not designed for continuous recording or wake word detection. Users must manually activate the device by tapping and dragging on the touchscreen, indicated by the “Trust Light” flashing to signal data collection.
The primary function of the Pin is to connect with AI models via the AI Mic program. Humane has referenced collaborations with Microsoft and OpenAI, with indications that the device heavily utilizes GPT-4, particularly ChatGPT. Its operating system, Cosmos, aims to seamlessly direct queries to relevant tools without the need for traditional apps.
Humane’s objective with the Pin is to streamline user experiences by eliminating unnecessary software complexities. The device allows users to simply interact with it through voice commands or touch, without intricate settings or multiple accounts. The company envisions a user-friendly device akin to smart speakers, which have gained popularity for their straightforward command-based interactions.
The key question revolves around the device’s actual capabilities. Many of the features highlighted by Humane align with those demonstrated by co-founder Imran Chaudhri at a TED presentation earlier this year, such as voice messaging, the “find me up” feature for email management, health information retrieval by scanning food items, and real-time translation. Beyond these functions, the AI Pin appears to primarily serve as a portable AI-powered search tool. Nonetheless, Humane has hinted at upcoming features including shopping and navigation capabilities, as well as tools for developers to create their applications.
Humane views the AI Pin as the initial phase of a broader initiative, recognizing the potential for iterative improvements and the tech industry’s ongoing exploration of AI applications.
