The need to convey a message arose. A sleek two-inch magnetic pin, a product of the startup Humane, affixed to my shirt, emitted a distinct clicking sound.
As I spoke, the words effortlessly materialized in my hand, delivered with a swift “whoosh” upon a subtle elbow movement.
The AI Pin represents a fresh approach to smart technology, aiming to reduce our reliance on screens. Its functionalities encompass photography, music playback, calls, messaging, and information retrieval. Pre-orders will commence on November 16 at a price of \(699, accompanied by a \)24 monthly subscription. The organization anticipates shipping the devices by early 2024.
Like any cutting-edge technology, it evoked a sense of marvel intertwined with unfamiliarity. Navigating the menu light required a brief moment of gesturing in front of my abdomen. Mastering the wrist-circling motion took a bit of practice. However, after a mere ten minutes of wearing the device at the company’s headquarters, I adeptly managed the light controls.
The tactile interaction was particularly engaging. Squeezing triggered music playback, while a pinch initiated a new communication. Another pinch led back to the menu. Coined as “picking” by Humane’s co-founder Imran Chaudhri, this tactile engagement added a unique dimension to the user experience. “Pinching is powerful,” he remarked.

While my phone bombarded me with notifications and updates, the AI Pin discreetly facilitated tasks without overwhelming me. It efficiently guided me through tasks, unlike the prolonged engagements typical of social media platforms like TikTok.
In a departure from the intrusive nature of smartphones, Humane’s approach is more inviting. As I released my grip, the light discreetly dissipated.
Interacting with the touch screen allowed me to pose queries and capture images with a double-tap. However, the absence of a visual display meant I had to rely on the online storage hub with a capacity of 32 gigabytes provided to Humane users.
The “personic speakers” on the device delivered music from Tidal, a streaming service, offering early subscribers a trial period. Executing commands via voice proved swifter on the AI Pin compared to mainstream virtual assistants like Alexa or Siri. The seamless integration of voice commands for music control was notably efficient.
To activate the AI Pin, users simply touch the device, setting it apart from conventional smart assistants. Its AI component enhances user interactions by providing personalized responses and recalling previous interactions, although occasional technical glitches may occur.
Addressing concerns about screen immersion, Humane’s product executive emphasized the importance of human connection facilitated by the AI Pin. Amidst the device’s functionalities, the focus remains on interpersonal engagement, ensuring that users stay present and connected without succumbing to digital distractions.
