Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24, during the Unpacked 2024 event today. While the new device didn’t bring many surprises, there was unexpected news regarding older phones—they are set to receive AI capabilities.

The Galaxy S24 boasts several AI features, such as a generative editing function akin to Google’s Magic Editor, the ability to highlight text for a quick Google search (a feature also making its way to the Pixel 8), real-time translation, a chat assistant that adapts to your writing style, voice memo transcription and summarization, among others.

While certain AI functionalities are integrated into the S24 hardware, some are cloud-based and do not rely on the device’s processing power. Although the full array of features is best experienced on the latest model, Samsung has announced that some AI capabilities will be extended to older devices.

These devices include the S23 series, the S23 FE, the Z Fold 5, the Z Flip 5, and Tab S9 series. The rollout of these new features is anticipated before June.

The specifics of the features coming to older devices remain undisclosed, but it is likely to involve cloud-dependent functionalities like photo editing—similar to Google’s introduction of Magic Erase to legacy devices. Notably, standout features such as real-time phone call translations are typically processed directly on the device, indicating that users may not have access to all premium features.

However, there is a caveat. Samsung has stated that these features will be complimentary until the conclusion of 2025. The company has not clarified whether users will be required to pay for continued access post-2025 or if the features will be discontinued altogether.

Nonetheless, the temporary availability of these acclaimed AI features for approximately a year and a half will undoubtedly enhance the user experience for Galaxy owners. This trial period may serve as an incentive for users to upgrade or subscribe to the services in the future.
