Sam Altman, one of the creators of ChatGPT produced by OpenAI, was swiftly ousted from the company shortly before a surprising business overhaul that sent ripples through the artificial intelligence community, as announced by Microsoft on Monday.
In a surprising turn of events, Altman, alongside fellow OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and other AI experts from the firm, are set to collaborate with Microsoft to lead a “newly formed AI research team,” as revealed by Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Nadella further disclosed that Microsoft, the primary purchaser of OpenAI and the developer of software, expressed anticipation in welcoming their new CEO, former Twitch leader Emmett Shear, who was appointed to take over from Altman.
Responding to Nadella’s announcement on X, Altman affirmed, “The vision endures.”
In a separate statement on X, Shear confirmed his appointment as the new CEO of OpenAI, stating that he accepted the role after deliberating with his family and contemplating the unique opportunity presented to him.
Shear also addressed the circumstances surrounding Altman’s departure, clarifying that Altman was not dismissed due to concerns regarding AI risks, contrary to speculations.
The reason behind Altman’s dismissal stemmed from a review that uncovered his lack of transparency in his interactions with the board of directors, who had raised doubts about his leadership capabilities.
During Altman’s tenure as CEO, ChatGPT gained widespread recognition on a global scale, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in Silicon Valley’s discourse on the promises and perils of artificial intelligence.
Last month, OpenAI announced Brockman’s resignation as board chair, with Brockman sharing his resignation letter to OpenAI members on X, expressing his decision to step down.
In a candid revelation, Ilya Sutskever, the company’s co-founder and prominent figure, informed Altman of his termination during a board meeting, a disclosure reiterated by Brockman in a subsequent post on X.
Brockman further conveyed his shock and disappointment at the board’s actions, emphasizing the profound impact of the decisions made.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, established in 2015 in San Francisco, garnered significant attention over the past year, enabling Altman to engage with influential figures such as President Joe Biden.
