Johnny Flynn expressed his approval of being eliminated in “Ripley,” despite potential dissent from his character, Dickie Greenleaf.
The British actor engaged in preproduction and rehearsals with his colleagues in Italy for Steve Zaillian’s Netflix series. However, Flynn returned home once filming commenced. His co-star Andrew Scott and others initiated the series with scenes following Dickie’s demise in Episode 3. Upon Flynn’s return, he embarked on the pivotal boat sequence.
During a panel discussion in New York City after a screening of Episodes 1-3, Flynn shared his enthusiasm for the technical intricacies of filmmaking involved in the boat scene. He described it as one of the most technical sequences he had been a part of, combining work in a tank with a green screen and at sea, requiring him to remain motionless as Dickie’s lifeless body.
Despite Dickie’s demise in Episode 3, his presence continues to influence the narrative significantly. Flynn reflected on the inevitability of his character’s death and its impact on the storyline, emphasizing its sacrificial and totemic nature.
Following Dickie’s death, his character persists through visions and dreams experienced by Tom, portrayed through underwater sequences filmed in the ocean with the aid of divers and pulley systems.
Flynn humorously recounted his relief upon learning that AI technology could assist in certain scenes, particularly those involving challenging underwater shots. He highlighted the benefits of AI, contrasting it with the challenges faced during the strikes last year.
“Ripley” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
