Ever since its inception, DALL-E has stood out as a remarkable image creator, producing captivating visuals based on textual inputs. While achieving the precise image envisioned often required multiple adjustments to the prompts, new functionalities have now streamlined the process.

This week, OpenAI introduced the DALL-E editor interface, allowing users to directly modify the generated images by selecting specific areas within the platform itself.

Unlike other AI image generation tools like Microsoft’s Designer, which offer in-platform image editing capabilities, the distinguishing feature of the DALL-E editor interface is the ability to make edits using conversational prompts rather than manual adjustments.

Each image generated by DALL-E comes with a “select” option, denoted by a paint brush icon, enabling users to pinpoint the area they wish to edit effortlessly.

Upon selecting a section of the image, users can easily make additions, removals, or updates by simply typing the desired action, such as “remove bird” or “add cherry blossoms,” as demonstrated in the accompanying image.

Furthermore, users can globally modify the entire image through conversational commands by typing their desired changes in the conversation panel located on the right side of the DALL-E editor interface. For instance, a user could request to “convert it to black and white” to alter the image’s color scheme entirely.

The DALL-E editor interface is also integrated into the ChatGPT app, allowing users to edit DALL-E generated images by clicking the “Edit” button and entering their desired modifications in the conversation panel. Similarly, users can utilize the “select” tool to highlight specific areas for editing.

It is important to note that as of February 21, OpenAI has discontinued new subscriptions to DALL-E 2, redirecting users to DALL-E 3, which is exclusively accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, as well as through the OpenAI API.

Despite having utilized DALL-E 2 since its launch, I encountered difficulties accessing it while preparing this piece, likely due to the cessation of free credit allocations by OpenAI, previously provided to DALL-E 2 users at the start of each month.

To utilize the DALL-E editor interface, a ChatGPT Plus subscription is now mandatory, as free access to DALL-E is no longer available. The subscription fee for ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month.

An added advantage of DALL-E 3 is the ability to generate images directly within the ChatGPT interface, enabling seamless transition between text and image prompts without leaving the platform. For those unwilling to subscribe, DALL-E 3 can be accessed for free through Microsoft Designer.
