Beijing-headquartered ByteDance’s platform showcased over 320 job opportunities related to GenAI as of Tuesday, marking an increase from the 307 positions advertised a month earlier, as per findings by the South China Morning Post.

A specific search focusing on roles related to the development of large language models (LLMs) revealed 130 open positions, compared to 107 in February, based on a dedicated job search in this field.

As reported by Sina, ByteDance’s technology arm, known as the Pass department, has reportedly recruited artificial intelligence experts from Baidu’s Ernie Bot development team and Alibaba Group Holding’s cloud division. It’s worth noting that Alibaba is the parent company of the Post.

According to the Sina report, employees in the Flow department at ByteDance have clandestinely agreed to work on Saturdays and occasionally put in extra hours on Sundays. This department was established recently within ByteDance’s solution development and engineering division.

Beijing Chuntian Zhiyun Technology, a subsidiary of ByteDance, introduced the GenAI game Hualu, a Taiwanese adaptation of BagelBell, tailored for global audiences in December. Through diverse narratives set in different realms, users can craft virtual personas and engage with them in real-time across both applications. ByteDance did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Following CEO Liang Rubo’s criticism of employees for their lack of urgency and slow response to ChatGPT’s emergence in an internal meeting, ByteDance, a privately held company, has swiftly embarked on new initiatives to bridge the gap in GenAI advancements.

Liang, along with ByteDance’s co-founder and former CEO Zhang Yiming, has initiated measures to enhance the recruitment of AI professionals, streamline the organizational framework, and propel fundamental research within the company, according to a recent report by the Post.

Prior to the launch of BagelBell and Hualu, ByteDance had introduced various AI tools such as chatbots Doubao and Cici, along with the app development platform Coze. However, none of these offerings have come close to rivaling the popularity of the company’s flagship short video applications.

ByteDance’s AI-driven content recommendation system, which tailors personalized content for users of TikTok, Douyin, and the news aggregator Jinri Toutiao, has long been recognized as a highly successful application of AI technology.
