The man from California who has been charged with recording a crime and sharing the video on his Instagram page alleges that his admission was actually generated by artificial intelligence during his latest court appearance.

On July 26, 2023, Mark Stephen Mechikoff, a 39-year-old resident of Pacifica, stands accused of fatally stabbing Claribel Estrella in her San Mateo residence. The prosecution asserts that he utilized his cell phone camera to capture Estrella’s final moments as she tragically succumbed on the floor of her home.

Subsequently, this video was disseminated on his Instagram account, eliciting widespread shock and disbelief.

Mechikoff has pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder.

A man from California shared a video on Facebook: Allegedly filmed himself committing a fatal stabbing.

During a preliminary hearing in a San Mateo County courtroom, prosecutors alleged that Mechikoff confessed to the crime but attributed his admission to being “AI-generated.”

On the day of the incident, some of Mechikoff’s Facebook acquaintances, including a woman from Florida who alerted law enforcement, viewed the profoundly disturbing video. The woman stated that she had witnessed an image of a person lying on the ground drenched in blood.

Another individual who claimed to have seen the video on Facebook promptly reported the stabbing to the Nye County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada. Subsequently, the sheriff’s office traced the phone number associated with a large San Mateo residential complex back to the Facebook platform.

Law enforcement officials, following leads, located Estrella nearly three hours later within a building. While Mechikoff may have had some acquaintance with her, the police have not disclosed the nature of their relationship.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe informed KRON 4 that the Facebook post served as evidence that the accused murderer exhibited a “particular confidence” in his criminal actions.

Mechikoff’s defense counsel requested a postponement of the hearing on Friday citing the need for additional preparation time. The hearing has been rescheduled for March 21 at 9 a.m.

Mechikoff remains in custody without the possibility of bail.
