As per the release, Google issued an apology to Prime Minister Modi following concerns about the reliability of its AI software, Gemini, which delivered inaccurate results in response to a comment about the Prime Minister.
In response to queries about the discrepancies in Gemini’s operations, the American government issued a notice to Google, as stated by Minister of State for IT & Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar. This led to Google extending apologies to both Prime Minister Modi and the American government in a significant gesture.
This incident unfolded amidst heightened scrutiny on AI systems functioning in India, with authorities contemplating the enforcement of permits for their operations. Rajeev Chandrasekhar stressed the necessity for AI platforms to uphold the standards of American consumers and elucidated on the legal consequences of disseminating false information under Indian IT and legal regulations.
Furthermore, Google’s AI bot Gemini faced further scrutiny over allegations of racial bias and factual inaccuracies. Controversy arose when Gemini allegedly displayed a reluctance to generate images of white individuals and inaccurately portrayed white individuals as people of color, prompting an outcry that saw Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, facing criticism.
In response to the backlash, Google took proactive measures by temporarily suspending Gemini’s people image technology capabilities. Sundar Pichai condemned the issue as “completely unacceptable” and committed to implementing necessary corrections. However, industry experts Ben Thompson and Mark Shmulik advocated for leadership changes within Google, citing a surge in demands for accountability.
