Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang suggested that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could potentially be accessible within the next five years as a default timeline.

During an interview on a Stanford University financial platform, Huang, who leads the prominent manufacturer of artificial intelligence cards crucial for developing technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, was questioned about the projected timeframe for achieving AGI with computers capable of human-like cognition.

In response, Huang emphasized that the timeline for realizing AGI is contingent upon how the objective of AGI is defined. If the primary focus is on the capacity to pass individual assessments, Huang expressed confidence in the imminent availability of AGI.

Huang remarked, “If I were to present an AI with a set of assessments and tasks, I believe that within five years, we would excel at each one of them.”

During the supermicro keynote address at COMPUTEX 2023, Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, unveiled the groundbreaking Grace superchip CPU designed for advanced AI applications. The event, hosting over 1,000 exhibitors from 26 countries across 3000 booths, served as a platform for showcasing cutting-edge products and facilitating international business transactions during the COMPUTEX 2023 event held from May 30 to June 22.

While AI has demonstrated proficiency in passing legal bar exams, it encounters challenges when tackling specialized medical assessments such as those in gastroenterology.

Regarding alternative perspectives on AGI, Huang acknowledged potential discrepancies arising from ongoing debates on the intricacies of human cognitive functions.

Highlighting the necessity for clearly defined objectives in professional settings, Huang remarked, “Achieving expertise in a field is a formidable task.”

Nvidia’s pivotal role as a leading provider of AI hardware has propelled a substantial increase in its market value.

Huang underscored the necessity for expanding semiconductor fabrication facilities while emphasizing the continuous enhancement of chip performance and algorithms, ultimately reducing the volume of cards needed by end-users.

Positioning itself as the third-largest U.S. company by market capitalization, Nvidia surpassed Google and Amazon, reaching a market cap exceeding $2 trillion, trailing behind only Microsoft and Apple.

Nvidia’s stock has witnessed a remarkable 70% surge in 2024. The share price of the AI chip giant has skyrocketed by 2,084% over the past five years and by 244% in the last year.
